So, I’m over at The Hostages, and the subject of tailgating at college football games comes up. Here was the first entry in the “cool tailgate rigs” contest.
Usually, when I think of tailgating, it is more like this:
When we were in the field for training, we would often lower the ramp until it was parallel with the ground and use it as a table to eat or take a nap. Not as much fun as a barbecue, but you take what you can get.

We use tailgating to mean the practice of following a vehicle at a very close (unsafe) distance.
Ok the pub truck is cool even if the beer is well….at least it isn’t Fosters.

Aaron, tailgating means the same here, depending on context. To cook out in the parking lot of a sporting event (off the tailgate of a pickup truck or station wagon) is an alternative use in idiomatic American English.
